Hello all. My name is Naysan, and I'm sorry to admit, I'm not actually a cosplayer myself. What on earth, then, am I doing here? That's an excellent question.
I'm a grad student at University of California - San Diego, getting my PhD in theatre. My research is primarily focused on issues of translation and adaptation, especially Shakespeare; however, pop culture is also a strong area of interest, particularly comics and cartoons.
I've taken over a small project started by one of my professors, which will be presented next month at the Comic Arts Conference that goes on in conjunction with Comic-Con. Just a short paper and poster presentation on the topic of cosplay. Specifically, racial identification and public roleplay as a form of self-identification. I'm here looking for thoughts and opinions from within the cosplay community on the topic. I'll be creating a specific topic with some questions on the matter, that will hopefully result in some interesting thoughts being shared, but please feel free to contact me directly if you think the project sounds at all interesting.
