We have made lots of swords and staves before. This time, let’s make a set of armor.

Show the origrinal picture first.

Style for the hero in Shining Wind is not intricate, except the cloth gown. Now, let’s make the armor first.

Required making materials:
Thick EVA boards in both 3 mm and 5 mm, electric iron and hot melt.

First, take a measurement and patten. I made a rough sketch on paper and got a conclusion: only three parts need pattening, covering the forepart of arms, baffles before ankles and knees. Plate cuts in above picture are upper parts of arms and the big baffle before ankles.
Other components are almost simple squares, only requiring clipping after being measured. Then, we do not have to prepare the paper matrix purposely.

Once the paper matrix is ready, we can clip EVA board. Just as above words imply, except those three big units, all other parts are squares in various shapes. We only need to take a rough measurement before clipping directly.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...riya/4.jpg

EVA is just a piece of flat board after being clipped. With some processing, it will become elements we require.
Begin from the hand armor. Curve it.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...riya/5.jpg

The commonest method to dispose EVA is hot working. EVA will become rather soft and pliable while being heated to a certain extent. It will keep the processed shape after cooling.
Electric iron can be used while heating up. Also, it's okay to use fire directly. But it's much more difficult to control the fire, which always causes an uneven heating on a large area. Furthermore, fire may directly burn up or scorch the board. So, use electric iron please.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...riya/6.jpg

Okay, let’s curve the heated material and keep that shape until cooling. If the finalized result is non-ideal, continue heating and make amendments directly.
Pay attention here: there is a limit for EVA’s adaptive capacity on heat. It can be heated and altered after cooling repeatedly in the allowable temperature range. Moreover, originally ideal elasticity is still kept on the molded material. However, when the temperature reaches or exceeds its enduring extremity, cooled material will sizing and become hard, allowing no alteration then. But correspondingly, an appropriate temperature enables it to keep the molded shape enduringly and steadily. Anyway, this depends on your own favor. But for me, I don't think it’s necessary to over heat because we will need reduplicative alterations most of time. Go over heating the board unless your required shape is too intricate and does not allow any deformation after sizing.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...riya/7.jpg

Okay, finalizing the design is completed.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...riya/8.jpg

Make other parts in the same way.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...riya/9.jpg

Splice curved elements by hot melt glue.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...iya/10.jpg

There are three parts in all.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...iya/11.jpg

Harness three parts together one by one. It’s wise to insert the first tier into the second layer after splicing. This avoids measurement error caused while splicing, which prevents you from nesting one level after another. Splice layer-by-layer upwards. This will ensure higher precision.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...iya/12.jpg

Make another hand armor in the same way. Then, main bodies for both hands are finished.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...ya/13.jpg]

Now, focus on frame tracery on the armor. Cut EVA into lathy stripes.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...iya/14.jpg

Adhere edges by hot melt glue. Curve stripes on corners.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...iya/15.jpg

Then, the whole hand armor is completed. Traceries on other parts can be made in the same way.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...iya/16.jpg

The same principle can be applied while crafting elements on feet. Heat and reshape. The big baffles around ankles are more intricate. You can heat repeatedly and process slowly. After all, plasticity on EVA is incredibly fabulous.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...iya/17.jpg

Do not forget the section before the calf.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...a/18-1.jpg

Cut a required EVA board. Heat it and make it curve. This layer is the baseboard.

Then, the second layer should be a little longer than the baseboard. The middle part should be hollowed out like above picture.

Finally, stick both layers together.

Large parts of elements have been finished. Brush white latex on the surface. Color when the latex becomes dry. Tracery is made by the same way mentioned above.
White tracery is made from EVA in 3mm because a light-colored pattern on knees and feet will look better. Remember to use mighty bond while sticking thinner EVA. It will be much better than hot melt glue.
You see from above picture, one of the knee armors lack a string. Okay, it does not matter. I will add one when latex becomes dry.

Let’s make the gloves before latex dries. Clip plate cut for each joint from EVA in 3mm.

Curve them like before. (you will find 80% of the entire work is curving.)
It’s really exaggerating and troublesome to use the electric iron to make such a small element. Use lighter directly. Roast it. Seconds are enough. Do not roast it too long.

It’s okay to buy a cheap black pair of gloves on the market. Stick all finger joints and the large piece on the back of hand upon.
You can put on the gloves and stick all elements upon. But this will be terrible because you may get burned continuously. So, put the gloves on a flat board and attach all parts please. The biggest defect in this way should be that the gloves may be less fitting.

I'm a doctoral student in the University of California - San Diego's department of Theatre & Dance, currently working on a project to be presented next month at the Comic Arts Conference, an academic conference presented in conjunction with Comic-Con, here in San Diego. The project is an investigation of racial identification in cosplay. I'm currently looking for any thoughts, reactions, and feedback from actual cosplayers on the topic. Please, feel free to reply to this topic here, or by contacting me privately, especially if you'd be willing to participate in a more in-depth interview.

From what I've seen, lurking on other forums, there seems to be an interesting difference in the way gender and race are used in cosplay. Over on Cosplay.com, they have a specific forum devoted to gender crossplay, offering binding advice and thoughts on public bathroom use as well as some more in-depth discussion on the personal issues involved in portraying a character of a different gender; however, I've come across no similar discussion regarding cross-racial-play. Why is that?

Some general questions:
-When you are considering a character to perform, do you look for characters that share your race? Are you more interested in characters of a different race? Is their race even a factor in the decision?
-What about in other people? If you're of Asian heritage yourself, how do you feel about Caucasians cosplaying as Asian characters? Vice versa? Do you feel any sort of racial ownership of the characters?
-Do you perform your character's race in any way? As part of the costume? Makeup? Vocally?
-To what degree do you think race is truly a part of these characters' identities? (For instance, with the ruckus over casting for The Last Airbender, one of the defenses used is that these are fictional characters, inhabiting a fictional world, and are therefore, by definition, not Asian; for many fans, however, the connections to Chinese culture is a strong part of the characters.)
-How do you feel about cross-gender-playing? Do you do it yourself? More or less comfortable than cross-race-playing?

Any other thoughts you may have, outside the confines of these questions, please share.
I will not use anything said here, or in personal discussions, without your permission, and any responses presented as part of the final project will be as anonymous as you want them to be.

Even if you're not willing to let me use your response as part of the project, please chime in with your thoughts. I'm genuinely interested.

I've taken over a small project started by one of my professors, which will be presented next month at the Comic Arts Conference that goes on in conjunction with Comic-Con. Just a short paper and poster presentation on the topic of cosplay. Specifically, racial identification and public roleplay as a form of self-identification. I'm here looking for thoughts and opinions from within the cosplay community on the topic. I'll be creating a specific topic with some questions on the matter, that will hopefully result in some interesting thoughts being shared, but please feel free to contact me directly if you think the project sounds at all interesting.

Recently, we have finished our new cosplay weapon - Elwyn's wand from Shining Tears Cosplay, so today , we will show you the process details:

The following is the original photo of Elwyn's wand.

I prefer to look at the pictures of the hand-made model when I make the prop.As the picture of the hand-made model looks more stereoscopic. The original picture is two-dimensional which is designed by the author at random without considering whether the model is three-dimensional or not. But it is a disaster to the maker of prop .

Main materials: 3 MM thick PVC foam board,5 MM thick EVA board,15 MM diameter stainless steel pipe with 120 CM length,20 MM diameter PVC water pipe,25 MM diameter PVC water pipe, one metal circle, white sheet iron, super glue, melt adhesive,AB glue, putty.

Make the body at first. Begin with wings.

Cut five pairs of PVC foam wings.

Glue five wings at each side by super glue. Each wing is bigger than another.

Each side has five PVC foam wings which makes a pair of symmetrical wings.

Cut EVA board into 15 mm wide strips(cut as you like), which can be seen below. Two EVA strips are needed.

Glue each wing to each EVA strip with melt adhesive.

The part glueing EVA strips and wings which looks stiff needs embellishment.Putty it, and grind it after solidification. Then the segment looks smooth.

In order that the wings look smooth, you can decorate the wings as above.

The next step is to make the top of the wand.

Fasten the metal circle to the screw with slim iron wire which makes it convenient to insert the metal circle in the water pipe.

I like to choose metal as the accessory. It depends on what you like.It is also a good choice to use the lightweight plastic ones.

I plan to insert the metal circle in the top PVC water pipe. But I choose the stainless steel pipe in order that the top handle is in shape and stable.

Now is to fix the metal circle on the stainless steel pipe.

Then fill the two openings of stainless steel pipe with AB glue reinforcing the top metal circle.

It is necessary to choose the suitable glue.

It depends.

Several kinds of glue are used when we make the prop.

For example it is convenient to use super glue to stick the small accessory and board.

It is ideal to use the hot melt adhesive for affusion. As the melt adhesive is not flowing but cooling quickly.

It is not convenient to use AB glue. But it is effective and stiff which is suitable to strengthen the unstable places.

Drill holes at the two sides of the stainless steel pipe, insert a metal bar and reinforce the metal bar with AB glue. The metal bar is to fix the wings which needs to be slim and not obvious. Thus it is better to choose the metal accessory bearing the weight.

The helix are made of two white sheet iron strips which have the same width as EVA strip. It is not wise to have wide white sheet iron strips. Be careful when you cut the white sheet iron.

It is better to stick the white sheet iron strips inside the EVA by AB glue. This makes it possible that white sheet iron strips are glued on EVA strips even the sheet iron strips are bent.

Drill holes at the side of wings.

Insert the metal bars in the wings and stick with AB glue.

Brush the handle and wings.(This can be done after the wand is finished. But it is a little troublesome.)

Do not spray the two EVA strips. If the EVA strips are sprayed right now, they may discolor when they are bent.

Twist the two EVA strips accroding to the picture, after the glue on the white sheet iron strips are solidified.

Although it is not easy to reshape EVA strips, the white sheet iron strips help to be in shape after delicate adjustment. It takes much time to adjust the shape of EVA strips. As the white sheet iron strips are also flexible which are not easy to control.

Do not cover the hole stainless steel pipe when you twist EVA strips around the steel pipe.

Leave the steel pipe at least 30 CM long without the helix in order that the top stainless steel pipe fits the below PVC water pipe later.

It is time to process the below handle.

Cut a 25 MM diameter, 10 CM long PVC water pipe.

Wrap a 0.33 MM thick plastic strip at each opening of the water pipe which makes the water pipe look nice.

Prepare a long 20 MM diameter PVC water pipe which is the main part of the wand.

How long is the water pipe?

It depends on what you like.

Fix the 25 MM diameter PVC water pipe in the long 20 MM diameter water pipe.

Melt adhesive can be used to fasten the two PVC water pipes.

The last but most important is to fix the top handle and the below handle.

Spray the left stainless steel pipe with hot melt adhesive and insert it in the PVC water pipe quickly.

Otherwise the melt adhesive will cool. And it is impossible to push the steel pipe in the water pipe.

In order not to meet such a problem, you can use AB glue. But it is troublesome.

Do not forget to spray the helix with propylene at last.

Hello everyone,

Im Alice from cosplayweapon, today, i decide to post my Elmina Rhoderia's wand tutorial ,this tutorial will provide all the making process details of this wand, which can inspire you some ideas to make your own cosplay props or other accessories.Sorry about my poor english, ask your questions here, i will try my best to reply you.:)

the wand is featured with irregular shape but there is no need to follow the original grain of the wand in the game , just look alike will be ok.

The original picture of the wand is below:

Material: PVC water pipe, iron wire, paper, transparent adhesive tape, epoxy resins, putty.

Do the following steps:

1. Bend the iron wire as a circle and insert the circle in the PVC water pipe.

2. Wrap the above with paper and transparent adhesive tape in layers until the wand head appears. The handle just touches concavo-convex, without special requirements.

3. The shape of the wand appears. Some alterations are still needed.I am anxious to finish the wand. Thus I plan to fix the handle in order that the finished part keeps in shape.

4. Mix up the epoxy resins in proper proportion.

5. Spray epoxy resins on the whole handle, ensuring the whole handle is sprayed with epoxy resins. The handle become firm after solidified by the epoxy resins. The epoxy resins passivate the handle and make the handle tender

6. I continue to reshape the wand head. The diameter of the wand head is smaller than the original. Then I enlarge it by using knife and wrap the inside of the head with transparent adhesive tape again, making it look bulged

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...awand7.jpg

7. Brush the resins and then spray the primer on the wand in order to see the wand in details. (I prefer the black.)

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...awand8.jpg

8.Putty the hollow. (Fill the hollow with putty.)Although the resin passivates the paper, the wand is not stiff enough. Thus I do more to make it become better.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...awand9.jpg

9. Rub down the wand and grind the tuber.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...wand10.jpg

10. Then the wand touches slippery after the above procedures.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...wand11.jpg
11. Spray the mixed paint on the wand.Just color the wand as you like.It does not matter whether the wand is colored like the original or not.I choose the bright color personallly. The bright color makes the wand seem to be plump. The wand touches more bulged than the model.

http://i759.photobucket.com/albums/xx237...wand12.jpg

12. Put the colored wand in a dry place.

13. Find a plastic ball used for Christmas and perforate the two sides of the ball.

14. Perforate the two sides of the wand head too. Insert an iron wire between the two holes of the wand head to fasten the plastic ball.Right now the Elmina's wand in Shining Wind Cross is finished.
